Toddler Dies from Self Inflicted Gunshot to Face
On Sunday afternoon, a toddler was being watched by his grandparents in the Spring-area. The grandparents live in the Brainbridge Estates. Around 3:45 p.m., he was put down for a nap in the master bedroom and left unattended. At 4:00 p.m., a gunshot echoed throughout the house. The toddler had found his grandfather's handgun, and accidentally shot himself in the face. The child was life-flighted to Memorial Hermann hospital in critical condition, but passed away on Monday. Currently, the grandparents have not been charged. However, in Texas, it is illegal to leave a firearm accessible to children. Just this year alone, at least 5 children have been shot due to discovering guns that were not properly and safely stored. Despite the high occurrence of this tragedy, in the past 8 years, there have only been 14 charges brought up against those who have left a firearm within reach of a child. Mostly, this is due to the reluctance to charge grieving parents. The crime, if the grandparents are charged, is a Class A misdemeanor.
