Forest Oaks Park Closed, Severe Flood Damage

This alert was sent out from the Harris County WCID #110 Parks & Recreation Department:

"Forest Oaks Park has suffered the worst it ever has in its 10 year history!

The most severe damage starts on the creek side of the big lake right about at pavilion 4 (Above the big dock) and continues around to the big bridge. From the park entrance around to pavilion 4 is in pretty good shape, from the back gate to the big bridge is pretty good shape, and most of the park on the house side of the lake is in pretty good shape.

We need to do some closer inspections, but all of the pavilions and bridges are structurally in good shape. The docks are still under water as of 4/23/16.

In the severe areas, Pavilion 5 & 7 have sand 3 to 4 feet high under the pavilions burying the tables. The entire nature walk area (lazy river) is under 3 to 5 feet of sand. Parts of the asphalt road in that area is covered with 1 to 4 feet of sand too. TONS & TONS of sand is in drifts and flat areas from the fire pit to the big bridge under sand 1 to 5 feet deep. The lake slopes on that side are 3 feet higher due to sand drifts. We are pretty sure there are sand bars in the middle of the big lake on that side too. We have just under 1/4 of the granite trails around the park completely washed out. Both front and back gate controllers are destroyed.

Starting on Monday, we go to war in the park and do not have any rules of engagement. We will be bringing in some BIG guns and equipment to get the park back into shape as soon as possible! These construction vehicles are dangerous, hard to see from and moving very fast in all different directions. We are estimating a MINIMUM of 6 to 8 weeks, for the entire park to be accessible again.

We are currently working on a plan to REOPEN parts of the FRONT of the park by the end of next week. We will post NO TRESPASSING barriers starting behind the stairs leading from Cypress Forest Lakes to allow residents to walk down the stairs toward the playground and to the front of the park. On the creek side, we will post barriers just past the park bathrooms and pavilion 3. That will mean the park from the front parking lot to the top of the big lake that includes the playground, bathrooms, the upper lake to pavilion 3 will be open soon. We will have Pavilions 1, 2 & 3 back open for rentals at that time too.

Additionally, we may open the area around the back lake again in 2 or 3 weeks.

When we open this section, we will CLOSE the asphalt road to foot traffic until ALL repairs are made. We will have a LOT of trucks and big equipment transiting the asphalt road CONSTANTLY and do not need pedestrians in the way on the asphalt until ALL repairs are completed during the next 6 to 8 weeks. PLEASE obey all staff, signs and barriers after sections of the park are back open so we do not have to keep the entire park closed during this recovery period.

Our Manager REALLY wants to continue to be Mr. Nice Guy and REALLY prefers NOT to have the be the mean guy that has the Constables come arrest anyone because they do not obey the barriers and no trespass signs and put yourself or family in danger. This is for YOU and YOUR FAMILY'S SAFETY!

I MUST REITERATE that the park is CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE and if you are caught in the park without authorization, you are CRIMINAL TRESPASSING and will be prosecuted. This is for SAFETY & LIABILITY REASONS!!

Thanks again and know that we are working as hard as we can to reopen the entire park as soon as possible!"
